Hello!
My name is Mary and I'm a writer and artist who believes the most magical stories are often found in the most unexpected places. My work is inspired by a deep-seated love for folklore, a background in education, and a belief in the power of a good story to connect us.
For over 17 years, I had the privilege of working in education, first as a primary school teacher and most recently as a Specialist Advisory Teacher for children with physical support needs. This experience taught me the importance of clear communication and compassionate support, but more importantly, it gave me a front-row seat to the boundless imagination of children. I learned what stories truly resonate with young minds- those that are not only full of adventure but are also honest and emotionally rich. My time creating supportive, creative learning environments has deeply influenced my approach to crafting characters and worlds that are both relatable and extraordinary.
My passion for cultural heritage and storytelling led me to volunteer at The Story Museum in Oxford. My work there, from assisting with tours to contributing to promotional designs, gave me hands-on experience in the art of engaging audiences and making stories come alive. This, coupled with training in heritage management and museum learning, provides a unique foundation for my writing, allowing me to weave authentic folklore and history into my fantastical narratives.
I also attended the John Ruskin school of Art Summer School in Cambridge for illustration.
I hold a B.A. Honours Degree in English Literature and have studied creative writing at the University of Oxford's Department for Continuing Education. My work has been recognised in literary competitions, shortlisted for the Flash 500, and placed in the top 3% for the Bridport Prize for short fiction.
I live with my young family in North Oxfordshire, UK, where I am continually inspired by the local landscape and its rich history. When I'm not writing or drawing, you can find me skulking around churchyards, always on the hunt for a good story.
